68. Surah Al-Qalam
The Pen
نٓ ۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ Arabic
Nun By the pen! By all they write! English - Abdel Haleem
مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍۢ Arabic
Your Lord’s grace does not make you [Prophet] a madman: English - Abdel Haleem
وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍۢ Arabic
You will have a never-ending reward–– English - Abdel Haleem
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍۢ Arabic
Truly you have a strong character–– English - Abdel Haleem
فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ Arabic
And soon you will see, as will they, English - Abdel Haleem
بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ Arabic
Which of you is afflicted with madness. English - Abdel Haleem
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ Arabic
Your Lord knows best who strays from His path and who is rightly guided. English - Abdel Haleem
فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ Arabic
So do not yield to those who deny the truth–– English - Abdel Haleem
وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ Arabic
They want you to compromise with them and then they will compromise with you–– English - Abdel Haleem
وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍۢ مَّهِينٍ Arabic
Do not yield to any contemptible swearer, English - Abdel Haleem
هَمَّازٍۢ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍۢ Arabic
To any backbiter, slander-monger, English - Abdel Haleem
مَّنَّاعٍۢ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ Arabic
Or hinderer of good, to anyone who is sinful, aggressive, English - Abdel Haleem
عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ Arabic
Coarse, and on top of all that, an imposter. English - Abdel Haleem
أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍۢ وَبَنِينَ Arabic
Just because he has wealth and sons, English - Abdel Haleem
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ Arabic
When our revelations are recited to him, he says, ‘These are just ancient fables.’ English - Abdel Haleem
سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلْخُرْطُومِ Arabic
We shall brand him on the snout! English - Abdel Haleem
إِنَّا بَلَوْنَٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا۟ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ Arabic
We have tried them as We tried the owners of a certain garden, who swore that they would harvest its fruits in the morning English - Abdel Haleem
وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ Arabic
And made no allowance [for the Will of God]: English - Abdel Haleem
فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ Arabic
A disaster from your Lord struck the garden as they slept English - Abdel Haleem
فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ Arabic
And by morning it was stripped bare, a desolate land. English - Abdel Haleem
فَتَنَادَوْا۟ مُصْبِحِينَ Arabic
Still they called each other at daybreak, English - Abdel Haleem
أَنِ ٱغْدُوا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰرِمِينَ Arabic
‘Go early to your field if you wish to gather all its fruits,’ English - Abdel Haleem
فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟ وَهُمْ يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ Arabic
And went off, whispering, English - Abdel Haleem
أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌۭ Arabic
‘Make sure no poor person enters the garden today!’–– English - Abdel Haleem
وَغَدَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍۢ قَٰدِرِينَ Arabic
They left early, bent on their purpose– English - Abdel Haleem
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ Arabic
But when they saw the garden, they said, ‘We must have lost our way! English - Abdel Haleem
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ Arabic
No– we are ruined!’ English - Abdel Haleem
قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ Arabic
The wisest of them said, ‘Did I not say to you, “Will you not glorify God?”’– English - Abdel Haleem
قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ Arabic
They said, ‘Glory be to God, Our Lord! Truly, we were doing wrong!’– English - Abdel Haleem
فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ يَتَلَٰوَمُونَ Arabic
And then they turned to each other in mutual reproach. English - Abdel Haleem
قَالُوا۟ يَٰوَيْلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَٰغِينَ Arabic
They said, ‘Alas for us! We have done terrible wrong, English - Abdel Haleem
عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًۭا مِّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ Arabic
But maybe our Lord will give us something better in its place: we truly turn to Him in hope.’ English - Abdel Haleem
كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ Arabic
Such is the punishment [in this life], but greater still is the punishment in the Hereafter, if only they knew. English - Abdel Haleem
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ Arabic
There will be Gardens of bliss for those who are mindful of God. English - Abdel Haleem
أَفَنَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ Arabic
Should We treat those who submit to Us as We treat those who do evil? English - Abdel Haleem
مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ Arabic
What is the matter with you? On what basis do you judge? English - Abdel Haleem
أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَٰبٌۭ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ Arabic
Do you have a Scripture that tells you English - Abdel Haleem
إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ Arabic
That you will be granted whatever you choose? English - Abdel Haleem
أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَٰنٌ عَلَيْنَا بَٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ ۙ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ Arabic
Have you received from Us solemn oaths, binding to the Day of Resurrection, that you will get whatever you yourselves decide? English - Abdel Haleem
سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ Arabic
Ask them [Prophet] which of them will guarantee this. English - Abdel Haleem
أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ صَٰدِقِينَ Arabic
Do they have ‘partners’ [besides God]? Let them produce their ‘partners’, if what they say is true. English - Abdel Haleem
يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍۢ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ Arabic
On the Day when matters become dire, they will be invited to prostrate themselves but will be prevented from doing so, English - Abdel Haleem
خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ وَقَدْ كَانُوا۟ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَٰلِمُونَ Arabic
And their eyes will be downcast and they will be overwhelmed with shame: they were invited to prostrate themselves when they were safe [but refused]. English - Abdel Haleem
فَذَرْنِى وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ Arabic
So [Prophet] leave those who reject this revelation to Me: We shall lead them on, step by step, in ways beyond their knowledge; English - Abdel Haleem
وَأُمْلِى لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِى مَتِينٌ Arabic
I will allow them more time, for My plan is powerful. English - Abdel Haleem
أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ أَجْرًۭا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍۢ مُّثْقَلُونَ Arabic
Do you demand some reward from them that would burden them with debt? English - Abdel Haleem
أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ Arabic
Do they have knowledge of the unseen that enables them to write it down? English - Abdel Haleem
فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌۭ Arabic
Wait patiently [Prophet] for your Lord’s judgement: do not be like the man in the whale who called out in distress: English - Abdel Haleem
لَّوْلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ نِعْمَةٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌۭ Arabic
If his Lord’s grace had not reached him, he would have been left, abandoned and blameworthy, on the barren shore, English - Abdel Haleem
فَٱجْتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ Arabic
But his Lord chose him and made him one of the Righteous. English - Abdel Haleem
وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَٰرِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱلذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجْنُونٌۭ Arabic
The disbelievers almost strike you down with their looks when they hear the Qur'an. They say, ‘He must be mad!’ English - Abdel Haleem
وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ Arabic
But truly it is nothing other than a Reminder for all peoples. English - Abdel Haleem
